I used to think “having style” meant keeping up with trends, knowing what was in, buying what everyone else was wearing, and pretending I had it all figured out. But the more I tried to fit in, the more I started feeling disconnected from the person in the mirror. My closet was full, but nothing felt like me.
Somewhere along the way, I realized the people whose style I actually admired weren’t the most fashionable, they were the most themselves. Their outfits told a story. They weren’t trying too hard, but somehow, they always stood out.
That’s when it clicked: authenticity will always look better than perfection.
There’s something magnetic about someone who dresses like they mean it. Not for approval, not for attention, but because their outfit feels right. It could be a thrifted tee, vintage boots, or a random mix of patterns that shouldn’t work but somehow does. When it’s real, it works.
You can’t fake that kind of energy. When you’re wearing something that feels like you, you stand taller. You walk differently. You don’t spend the whole day adjusting your clothes or worrying if it’s “too much.” You just are.
That’s what real style is. It's not about being noticed, but about being known.
If you want your style to feel real, you have to know who you are or at least be curious enough to find out. Ask yourself:
Your answers to those questions are your true aesthetic.
You don’t need to lock yourself into one “look.” Some days you might want to be polished and sleek; other days you just want baggy jeans and messy hair. Authentic style isn’t about consistency, it’s about honesty. It’s about dressing for your mood, not your followers.
Start simple. Look at what you already own and ask, Do I actually love this? Keep the pieces that make you feel good, not just the ones that were expensive or trendy.
Try on outfits you’ve always wanted to wear but felt scared to. Experiment without judging yourself. Save photos or outfit ideas that make you feel something, not just what’s popular.
And most importantly, stop trying to impress a version of yourself you’ve outgrown. Style is meant to evolve, just like you do.
The people who seem to have the best style aren’t overthinking it. They just know themselves. They wear their clothes — not the other way around.
And that’s what authenticity really does: it frees you. When you dress for yourself, you stop chasing an image and start living in alignment with who you are.
So the next time you’re standing in front of your closet, forget what’s trending. Forget what people will think. Ask yourself one question:
Does this feel like me?
If the answer is yes — that’s your outfit.
